The free Google Sheets gradebook template for teachers

A weighted gradebook template that calculates category averages, running percentages, and letter grades. Make a copy, type in your scores, and stop rebuilding the same formulas every September.

  • Weighted categories that actually work. Set homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and participation to any split you like. The sheet checks that your weights total 100% and turns red when they do not.

  • Running averages from week one. Each student's grade only counts assignments they have a score for, so a half-marked term still gives you a number that means something.

  • Letter grades on your scale. Edit the cut-offs once on the Setup tab and every letter grade updates. Works for A-F, pass/fail, or whatever your school uses.

  • A summary tab you can read at a glance. Per-category averages, final percentage, letter grade, class average, and a count of students below 60% - without writing a single formula.

What the gradebook template does, and what it does not

Most free gradebook templates in Google Sheets are a grid with a AVERAGE() at the end of each row. That works until you weight tests more heavily than homework, or until a student misses two assignments and their average collapses for reasons that have nothing to do with what they know.

This one handles both. Category weights live on a Setup tab, and every running average is calculated against the points a student was actually marked on, not the points that exist in the sheet. Change your weighting in November and every grade recalculates.

Here is the honest limit. The template will tell you that Marcus is sitting at 78% in a term where he started at 61%. It will not tell his parents what that means, and it will not write the sentence. There is a column called Report comment on the Summary tab and it is deliberately empty, because a spreadsheet has no way to fill it. That part is still you at the kitchen table in December - which is exactly the problem we built Gradde to solve.

Setting it up takes about five minutes

  1. 1

Open the link we email you and choose 'Make a copy'. The copy is yours, in your own Drive, and we cannot see it.

  2. 2

On the Setup tab, name your class and set your category weights. The total cell turns green at 100%.

  3. 3

On the Gradebook tab, type student names down column A and assignment names across row 1, then pick a category and max points for each one.

  4. 4

Enter scores as you mark. The Summary tab fills itself in as you go.

If you would rather work on paper, File > Download > PDF gives you a printable gradebook you can keep in a folder. The formulas travel to Excel too.

Questions teachers ask before downloading

Do I need a Google account?
Yes, to make your own copy. Once it is in your Drive you can also download it as Excel or PDF from File > Download if you prefer a printable gradebook on paper.
Will you email me constantly?
No. You get the template, and occasional posts about grading and report cards. One click unsubscribes and we do not sell your address to anyone.
Is this the same as Gradde?
No, and that is deliberate. The template does the arithmetic. Gradde does the arithmetic and drafts the comments, which is the part a spreadsheet cannot help with.
